ISELI FL · Wiki

Wood chisel, mortise chisel, firmer chisel: one tool, many names

Depending on region and trade, the same tool goes by different names. For sharpening, one thing matters: a straight cutting edge with a clean, consistent bevel angle.

01

Wood chisel / bench chisel

The most common term. A flat chisel for joiners and carpenters, used for paring, trimming and fitting joints.

02

Firmer chisel

A sturdier chisel with a thicker blade, designed to be struck with a mallet.

03

Mortise chisel

Narrow and thick for cutting mortises. It also needs a perfectly straight cutting edge.

04

Paring chisel

A thin, flat chisel for fine fitting and finishing work, guided by hand.

ISELI FL

The ISELI FL sharpens all these flat chisels and plane irons reproducibly, whatever name is on the blade.

Frequently asked questions about chisel sharpening

What is the difference between a bench chisel and a mortise chisel?

A bench chisel has a wide, flat blade for paring and fitting. A mortise chisel is narrow and thick for cutting mortises with a mallet. Both are sharpened the same way.

What sharpening angle is right for a wood chisel?

For most woodworking, a bevel angle of about 25 to 30 degrees has proven itself. More important than the exact value is that it stays the same every time you sharpen.

How often should a chisel be sharpened?

As soon as the edge crushes wood fibres instead of cutting them or shows chipping. In joinery and carpentry workshops this is often weekly.

Why a sharpening machine instead of a whetstone?

The ISELI FL sharpens in seconds, always with the same angle and a straight edge, without honing. This saves working time and extends tool life.
